Zibaldone

Così tra questa
Immensità s'annega il pensier mio:
E il naufragar m'è dolce in questo mare.

Philosophy is meant to solve intellectual problems. But in life, there are never purely intellectual problems that concern only the mind. In life, there are only existential problems that radiate through the entire person : body, mind, and soul. One can make progress in a mathematical equation or a metaphysical question without committing anything of oneself: simply by unleashing the hounds of ideas ahead and saying to them, "Search, search." But one cannot take a single step in an existential ordeal without fully engaging oneself, because the very data of the problem is one's whole being, because the movements of thought and the beating of the heart become one, alone before the blank page, carried along by the rotation of the Earth.
